Sing Our Story

A personalised song-writing programme which supports children’s musical development, confidence and wellbeing.

What’s happening?

Sing Our Story is a personalised song-writing programme created by London-based charity, Groundswell Arts.

Groundswell Arts and Blue Cabin are collaborating to deliver Sing Our Story in North East England for the first time, with a focus on care-experienced babies and children.

“I really feel confident that the process and project will be impactful and held very sensitively.” Angeline Conaghan, joint artistic director and founder of Groundswell Arts.

How Sing Our Story works

Children, parents and carers and musicians write a unique lullaby or special song together, centered on the child’s likes, dislikes, interests and memories.

After a series of collaborative sessions with the musicians, the final song is performed and each child is given a recording of their song to keep.

What are the benefits?

The process helps build and strengthen relationships between children and their carers and it also supports their wellbeing, sense of identity and development of language and communication skills.

Research carried out by Groundswell Arts with a sample of 176 families showed that:

  • 79% of families agree or strongly agree that Sing Our Story has benefits for their children’s speech, language and communication
  • 99.3% of families felt it supported their child’s wellbeing and confidence
  • 90.8% of families felt the project had improved their relationship with their early years setting or school

Who’s involved?

In the North East of England, Blue Cabin Associate Artists, Katie Doherty and Carol Bowden, and musician Eleanor Mooney, will work with 12 care-experienced families to create their own, personal songs.

Each musician specialises in co-creating with care-experienced children and young people, supporting them to develop relationships and new skills.

Sing Our Story in the North East is funded by Youth Music.

What are people saying?

“It will be part of A’s memory box which will go with her when she goes to her new permanant family.”

“This is a big part of J’s life story…this is a lifelong memory.”

“Joyous and emotional. A wonderful gift for the child to treasure and a lovely memory for the carer.”
