Music Aid

A creative consultation with children and young people across South Tyneside and Gateshead to find out how they engage with music.

Blue Cabin worked with Gateshead and South Tyneside Music Education Hub (GSTMEH) to carry out creative consultation with children and young people to find out how they engage with music. The responses and findings from Music Aid supported the development of the Music Education offer across the two Local Authorities.

Associate Artist, Nicola Golightly, designed a set of creative activities for children and young people to complete at home, whilst responding to questions about music. The Music Aid box was delivered directly to children and young people through GSTMEH partners at Gateshead Council and South Tyneside Council.

What was in the boxes?

Nicola created a film to introduce the activities and materials in the Music Aid box. Activities included:

  • doodle zine – for mindful, creative activity
  • seeing sounds – creating a mural
  • alternative self-portrait artist zine

These activities offer a creative way of asking questions, and for the children and young people to be open and honest in their responses. This is all about the voice of the children and young people!

The only thing that children and young people returned to us was the Alternative Questionnaire, a wire bound booklet containing questions regarding young people’s experiences, understanding and interest in music-based activities.

Thanks to all the children and young people who have taken part and shared their views with us.
