Invisible Mothers is a collaboration between the University of Kent and the University of Essex, exploring mothers’ experience of adoption.
Researchers Dr Stella Bolaki and Dr Samantha Davey are using arts-led participatory research methods to investigate the challenges faced by mothers after their children have been adopted. Their work considers the healing potential of artists’ books for mothers dealing with the profound emotional impact of having their children removed and placed for adoption.
The Invisible Mothers team wanted to deepen its understanding of trauma-aware practice and the care system.
