Care experienced young people from Sunderland worked with Blue Cabin to devise and create a short film together, based on their own ideas and experiences.
The group worked with Blue Cabin Associate Artists, Nic Golightly, Laura Degnan and Ruth Mary Johnson, to explore creative processes and different mediums they could use to tell their story – such as animation or drawing. They discussed who they want to view the film – for example, teachers, social workers or peers – and the messages they would like to get across.
The group are aged from 12 to 18 years with a range of different levels of creative experience.

They were supported to share their ideas in a safe environment and make decisions together about their film.
Scriptwriter Ruth Johnson supported the group in developing words and phrases that captured the essence of what they wanted to say in their film. Nic Golightly, graphic designer, and Laura Degnan, filmmaker, then introduced them to stop-motion techniques and guided them in creating the visual content.
The young people used plasticine and other craft materials to build 3D characters and models, and filmed them using iPads. They also recorded themselves speaking their written words and phrases, which will be used as voiceovers in the final film.
