Blue Cabin has worked with South Tyneside Council, Darlington Borough Council and Gateshead Council to roll out this new approach and improve the lives of care-experienced children and young people in these areas.

We’re now inviting other local authorities to get in touch to find out about using the Creative Life Story Work model.

What are the benefits?

  • Creative Life Story Work helps children and young people gain a better understanding of their own experiences and form stronger relationships with the adults in their lives.
  • There is no national guidance for delivering life story work and this project puts in place a framework local authorities can follow, backed up by expert support.
  • This new approach has the potential to inform work across the UK.
  • Most importantly, Creative Life Story Work aims to improve the lives of care-experienced children and young people.

“The new model has already shown how a more creative approach can encourage young people to explore their emotions, which in turn has a positive impact on their relationships with the adults in their lives.”

Councillor Gary Haley, Gateshead Council

“He had this whole new vocabulary around how he was feeling and his foster carer said he’d started to open up in a way he had never done before.”

Local authority staff member

“I could speak more honestly and openly about stuff because now I know what to say […] like before all I could say was like, well I’m in care, I didn’t really know what to say about my family, but now I feel like I can.”
