Blue Cabin is currently looking for care-experienced people to work with its team as consultants, helping to shape the charity’s work. Dawn Williams, Blue Cabin’s strategic lead, answers some questions about the new roles.

What is a care experienced consultant?

A care experienced consultant is a new job role which we’re adding to the Blue Cabin team – we’re looking for up to four people, who are care experienced, to help improve, challenge, shape and strengthen the work we do.

The details of the role will depend on your interests, but it could include working with our artists, digital team, website design and fundraising or our Board.

You might get involved in group workshops and training sessions alongside other care experienced consultants; you could attend project planning meetings and offer advice on how young people are involved; or you might want to work with data, or test some of our resources and offer feedback.

Why has Blue Cabin created these roles?

Everyone at Blue Cabin understands just how important it is to include the voices and experiences of care experienced people in the design and planning of everything we do. The influence of our care experienced consultants will be felt across every aspect of Blue Cabin’s work.

For us, this is more than just consultation – it’s about working alongside people with experience of the care system right from the beginning, shaping what we do together.

This partnership is an opportunity to make a real difference. Together, we can create policies, projects, and programmes that reflect the needs and wisdom of those who know the system best.

Who can apply for the roles?

Anyone with experience of the care system who is over 18 can apply for this role.

As a care experienced person you may have spent time being cared for by a friend or family member with the oversight of children’s social care (a social worker); you might have been cared for by a foster carer; or you might have lived in a children’s residential home at some point in your childhood. We also want to hear from people who have been adopted.

If this describes your experience then you are an expert by experience and your voice is incredibly important to us!

We are recruiting nationally, so you can apply regardless of where you live in the UK, as the role can be carried out remotely.

What will the role involve?

The role is a paid opportunity, for seven hours a month, for 12 months.

We want to be flexible and find out which areas of Blue Cabin you are most interested in. Some of the things you could get involved with include:

– Working alongside an artist to develop a workshop idea
– Testing evaluation tools
– Commenting on our fundraising strategy
– Working with our digital and comms team to test our website

These are some of our ideas and suggestions but we are also keen to hear from you.

Do applicants need to have worked in a similar role before?

You can still apply, even if you haven’t worked in a role like this before.

We are busy putting together an induction programme which will include cuppas and chats with key people in the team so you can get to know Blue Cabin. You will have training, access to self care sessions with our therapeutic support team (find out more about Matt and Louise here), and regular chats with our pastoral support worker.

By working with us as a care experienced consultant you’ll also gain skills and experience to add to your CV, and we’ll provide you with a reference when you’re applying for jobs.

There are lots of other benefits to the role as well – have a look at the recruitment pack to find out more!
