A new artists’ book and virtual exhibition have been published, showcasing new artwork created by 10 care-experienced young artists in HMP Deerbolt.
Time Never Stops includes drawings, collages, poetry, lyrical essays and paintings, using a range of artistic techniques. It is the third in a series of online exhibitions and artists’ books published as part of Creative Aid – a partnership project by Blue Cabin and Nepacs, supporting the young men to be recognised as artists.
Over the last year, the young artists, who are all care-experienced, have worked with three different artists in residence to explore different methods, mediums and techniques. They have produced intricate pencil drawings made with clock mechanisms; wall paintings using stencils; collages; and watercolour paintings – amongst other works.
The artists in residence, Ruth, Lisette and Nick, and Nepacs worker Catherine, supported the group to try new techniques and to achieve Arts Award accreditation.
The group are the third cohort to take part in Creative Aid, which not only supports participants to gain new, creative skills, but also to develop and strengthen their relationships with others, explore their life stories, and to develop their confidence and sense of pride, wellbeing and emotional literacy.
Members of the group said:
“I never thought I’d be able to make something like this.” – a comment made after completing a perspective drawing.
“I didn’t even like art before. Now I want to keep going.” – a comment after taking part in the second watercolour session.
“He helped me start. I was gonna bin it again but he said ‘keep going, it’s decent.’” – a reflection on peer support.
