For the last six months, a group of young people in Tees Valley have been working on a short film about adoption. The group worked with Blue Cabin Associate Artists, Laura Degnan and Nic Golightly, to create the film together, from storyboard through to the finished product. Here is one young person’s account of what it was like to be a part of the project.
I have worked with Laura and Nicola. We collectively gathered ideas and began to develop them into a visual perspective that we could work with.
We have made kites for our filming on the beach near Redcar and enjoyed making little figures such as dogs and people for parts of our film.
I have enjoyed learning more about digital designing and graphics with Nicola. Nicola was very patient with me explaining how everything works and she even let me create some of the special effects for our film. I also enjoyed working with Laura to help create the perfect voice audio for our film.
What surprised me was just how much care and passion you could see from every individual involved in our film making. Even when things were challenging everyone still remained positive which is what made it a wonderful project to be able to do .
Some of us found it a bit difficult trying to make things like dogs and other stuff from play doh but we kept trying and eventually we got the results we wanted.
If I was to tell a young person about this project I would tell them that it’s a wonderful opportunity for them. Everyone at Blue Cabin is very respectful, welcoming and friendly. They are fantastic with all ages and really helped me share my message with others. Without them I would not be able to continue to share my adoption stories.
Once the film is finished I am looking forward to broadcasting it to the public. As an adopted adult I am passionate about sharing my experiences with others.
I have done similar experiences before but I have found that Blue Cabin are like a second home from home.
My aim of this film is that it raises awareness about how even the littlest of comments such as ‘how come you’re adopted?’ can impact an adopted child. These things are what adopted individuals suffer from in their daily lives.
The film showcases the highs and lows of being adopted and the impact of this towards adopted individuals.
The film was designed by individuals who themselves are adopted and wanted to show others what we are capable of.
Without the impact of Blue Cabin we would never have gotten the significant messages from our adopted individuals to life.
