Care-experienced young people in Gateshead have the chance to try their hand at a range of art forms, supported by professional artists – thanks to funding from the Gateshead VCSE Fund at the Community Foundation North East.
A series of taster days will take place, focusing on artforms including printmaking, animation, pottery, design, theatre-making, storytelling and puppetry. And for young people who want to develop their interest in theatre, there will be a five-day immersive theatre experience where they can practice new skills in theatre, storytelling and performance.
The series of events is being delivered by Blue Cabin, a charity which specialises in developing and strengthening relationships between care experienced individuals and the people in their lives through creative activities. The project is in partnership with Gateshead Virtual School and all the young people taking part, who are aged between 11 and 14, are supported by the Virtual School.
“Opening up new opportunities for care experienced children to explore the creative arts is a core aspect of the work we do to support our young people,” said Marianna Viglianisi-Grainger, secondary case worker at Gateshead Virtual School.
“We have been thrilled to collaborate with Blue Cabin on a range of exciting creative arts experiences. The feedback from our young people and their carers has been hugely positive, highlighting the real need for high quality, inclusive and innovative enrichment sessions such as those we have delivered with Blue Cabin. The work we have done together has enabled young people to grow in confidence, explore their creativity and make meaningful connections.”
The taster days will support the young people to experience a range of artforms for the first time, grow in confidence and learn new creative skills – at the same time as developing and strengthening relationships with their peers and the adults in their lives.
Each session will be led by a professional artist, meaning the young people will also get an insight into careers in the arts.
