Care-experienced children and young people in Northumberland will have the opportunity to work with professional artists and develop their artistic and creative skills, thanks to new funding.
The Netherton Park Trust, which delivers funding through The Community Foundation, has awarded a grant of £8,000 to Blue Cabin. This will fund a new partnership project with Northumberland Virtual School.
Jenny Young, director of Blue Cabin, explains how the money will unlock new opportunities and experiences for the children and young people: “Our team specialises in supporting care-experienced children and young people to explore the arts and creativity. This brings benefits to their confidence, skills and their relationships with others – all in a safe, trauma-informed environment.
“Thanks to this grant, and also to the match funding from Northumberland Virtual School, we can now expand our work into Northumberland, helping more care-experienced children and young people experience the benefits of creative activities.”
The new programme of activity will take place in the summer of 2025 and children and young people will have the opportunity to work alongside Blue Cabin associate artists, Alison McGowan and Laura Degnan, to explore artforms including theatre, puppetry, writing and film making.
Jane Walker, Virtual School Headteacher, is enthusiastic about the project and explains what Northumberland hopes to achieve from the collaboration: “Blue Cabin has an excellent reputation amongst Virtual Schools in the North East and we are excited about working together on an artistic project that will engage children and young people from our residential homes. Their skills will be showcased and their voices will be heard through the film they create at a celebrating achievement event in October.”
