Rohima Celine is a care leaver with a background in the creative field. She studied photography and fine art in college, followed by graphic design/visual communication at university and has worked as a creative peer facilitator and freelance artist with various museums. Rohima now focuses on fire performing while also working as an assistant restaurant manager.
In 2025, Rohima joined Blue Cabin as a trainee trustee, and is now a full member of the board. Here’s an insight into Rohima’s experience of being a trainee trustee, and how she believes trustees can help guide the work of Blue Cabin.
I initially applied for the Care-Experienced Consultant role which was sent to me via the Foundling Museum, where I attended an arts traineeship for care leavers and then worked as a freelance artist.
I then got the opportunity to interview for the trustee position which never occurred to me until then. What attracted me to Blue Cabin though was their mission and values, and how they use creativity to change lives for the better and develop relationships between care leavers and the people in their lives. These values resonate with me dearly and are also in line with my own values.
This will be my first trustee position and at first I felt a bit out of place, but receiving the support I have and being able to attend different workshops on, for example, self-care and financial governance, has helped me develop and or refine some new skills.
I have a trustee buddy as well as 1-to-1 check ins which help a lot. I have learnt so much already and I’m really enjoying the process.
There have been a few highlights but one that has stuck out to me has been learning about Creative Aid which is a co-creation project with care-experienced young men in Deerbolt Prison, supporting the young men (the lads) to be recognised as artists. I was overjoyed when I was sent a book filled with their work, and I’ve enjoyed learning about how great this project is and the impact it has.
Learning about the impact the project has on care experienced young people and how it is strengthening the relationships between them and the people in their lives is very rewarding to see. I cannot wait to dive into more projects.
I think trustees can add their skills and knowledge collectively to help make a positive difference to a charity like Blue Cabin as we all have different backgrounds and different strengths.
I personally hope to achieve not just new skills (I do love learning new skills) but first and foremost to help create a positive impact for care-experienced young people.
Going back to Blue Cabin’s mission to use creative activities to develop and strengthen relationships between care experienced people and the people in their lives – as a care leaver myself I know the importance of those relationships and how being a care leaver can add different challenges, on top of the challenges of growing up and figuring out who you want to become.
I personally felt growing up as a care leaver was limiting me in some way because I had the title of being a care leaver and the stigma behind it. But having strong relationships can make it so much easier as you can create your own strong support system, just a different one than society deems as normal.
I hope I can use my experience as a care leaver, the things I wish I knew earlier on and things I know could have been less challenging, to help other care leavers.
Creativity was something that helped me and I’m still very creative. It clearly has benefits as we can see from the work Blue Cabin already has achieved. I cannot wait to add my knowledge to support Blue Cabin in their mission.
