An artists’ book and online gallery showcasing artwork and creative writing by care-experienced young men in HMP Deerbolt has been created.
Piercing The Sky brings together some of the works produced by the young artists during the second year of Creative Aid, a partnership project by Blue Cabin and Nepacs, supporting the young men to be recognised as artists.
In the second year of the project, 10 young men have explored different artforms with Blue Cabin Associate Artists Ruth and Lisette, and visual artists Amy and Nick.
The group has explored artforms including poetry, printmaking, collage and drawing with visiting artists. Their artwork has gone on show in the reception area of the prison, and seven of the participants have achieved their Bronze Arts Award.
“I feel like something I’ve never felt before, which is an artist,” said one of the group.
Copies of the book will be given to the artists, placed in the library at HMP Deerbolt and shared with partners. An online gallery showing the artworks is available for everyone to view.
