Blue Cabin’s director, Jenny Young, was invited to attend the official launch of the Global Charter for Children’s Care Reform during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80) in New York on 24 September 2025.
The event was hosted by Dame Barbara Woodward, the UK’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, alongside Catherine Russell, Executive Director of UNICEF, and Rt Hon David Lammy MP.
Artwork and creative writing by young men in HMP Deerbolt (from Creative Aid, a partnership project with Nepacs) and images from a short film called All About Adoption, made by young people in Tees Valley (from Adopt Bats, a partnership with Adoption Tees Valley), were displayed throughout the launch.
A few weeks on from the event, Jenny shares her reflections on Blue Cabin’s involvement, and seeing creative work by care experienced people here in the North East showcased on a global stage.
I arrived at the United Nations building after a long walk through incredibly busy and unseasonably warm New York streets. It felt both surreal and joyful to be there, representing Blue Cabin, knowing that the work and creativity of children and young people from our region were about to be seen by people from around the world.
It also felt incredibly humbling to be there – seeing artwork exhibited and on digital screens at the United Nations was something special — not just for Blue Cabin, but for everyone who has been part of these projects and most importantly for the care experienced people we serve. Their voices and creativity filled that space in such an honest, powerful way.
Hearing Dame Barbara Woodward thank Blue Cabin during her speech was a moment I won’t forget. It was a real reminder of how our charity work can travel far beyond where it started only nine years ago — connecting people and sparking conversations in places you’d never expect.
After the event, we shared photos with the care experienced artists and our valued partner organisations, so they could see where their work had been shown and who had seen it.
I am incredibly grateful to David Bailey and Promilla Caughey for organising the event so thoughtfully and with such consideration of ensuring the voices of care experienced were held in a safe and trauma informed way throughout the event. I’m looking forward to staying in touch to explore how we might work together again.
Being part of this event has opened up new connections and conversations with people working on children’s care reform. We’ve since shared a letter of support to join the Global Campaign on Children’s Care Reform, as we want to play our part in this global movement.
We believe that genuine collaboration — across sectors, disciplines and borders — will help us all to create better systems of care, built on love, safety and belonging rather than separation and isolation.
At Blue Cabin, our work is all about relationships — between care-experienced people and the individuals in their lives — and how creativity can help develop and strengthen those connections. We believe that by working together across sectors and borders, we can contribute to systems of care that focus on love, belonging and understanding.
